Remember Those Boho Boots Kate Moss Wore Throughout The Noughties? They’re Back

From Glastonbury to London, there was a time when the supermodel almost exclusively wore this suede fringed footwear.

What is your earliest memory of having some sort of run-in with a pair of Kate Moss-tinged moccasin-style boots? For me, it was when my godmother’s daughter returned home after her first trip to NYC (this alone was a huge deal for a family in a German village), donning not just any old boots but - and these words would reverberate through my head every time I’d see her in them - ‘the exact pair that Kate Moss owns’. I can still picture them: beige suede, with fringing at the top, laced up all the way. They were a boho dream come true.

While most trend comebacks from those years is always a bit of a jump scare (think coin belts, waistcoats and low-rise jeans), when I scrolled through Net-A-Porter’s ‘new in’ section the other day and stumbled across a Minnetonka-adjacent shoe by Isabel Marant, my pulse remained eerily steady. Perhaps this is because any sort of resurgence these days is just a fashion editor’s bread and butter (and we've already lived through Marant's wedge sneaker 2.0 - how much more shocking can it get?) but maybe it's also because - and I’m being entirely transparent here - I was just waiting for the Moccasin-style shoe to land back on our doorsteps. Anything that had that level of impact on the fashion discourse is almost guaranteed to be recycled, reinterpreted and rehashed in some way or another, as a whole new generation is discovering those sartorial has-beens for the first time.

The return of these boho soles takes this season’s biggest trend to its logical conclusion. Courtesy of the Chloé-naissance (we have to thank Chemena Kamali, the label's creative director, for that), our obsession with the wavy-haired, free-spirited (free-nippled) and head-to-toe ruffled girl hasn’t reached its apex just yet, but the fringed shoes are certainly taking us a giant leap closer. If you’re reading this as a roast of the blast-from-the-past trotters, you are mistaken. Sure, we can’t help but take them with a pinch of salt, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t add them to our baskets. In fact, I might just call up my godmother’s daughter to check if she still has hers, and if she’s willing to sell them to me.
